Bahrain has no US tax treaty — and if you commute to Saudi Arabia, two countries are on your return.
No US income tax treaty, no totalization agreement, and no Bahraini income tax on employment income. Bahrain's particular complication is the causeway: a great many Americans live here and work in Saudi Arabia, which puts two host countries into one return.

What that means on your return
Living in one country and working in another does not split your US return, but it does change the evidence. Your qualifying period, your housing expenses and your employer's reporting can each point at a different country, and the return has to reconcile them.
Social insurance contributions withheld from an expatriate salary are not income taxes. They produce no foreign tax credit against US income tax, and with no totalization agreement in place they do not relieve US self-employment tax on any consulting you do on the side.
Bahrain rents are lower than Dubai or Doha, which usually means the foreign housing exclusion is smaller here — and that the day-count and the timing of a move matter proportionally more to the final number.

Questions I get about Bahrain
I live in Bahrain and work in Saudi Arabia. Which country matters?
Both, for different parts of the return. Your housing expenses are Bahraini, your employment is Saudi, and your qualifying period is tested on where you were physically present. Neither country has a treaty or a totalization agreement with the US, so the exclusion still does the work.
Are my social insurance contributions creditable?
No. They are not income taxes, so there is nothing to claim on Form 1116 and no relief from US self-employment tax.
Do I owe US tax if Bahrain taxes nothing?
You file, and often you owe nothing. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion covers $130,000 of earned income for tax year 2025, and the foreign housing exclusion can cover more. Above that, US tax applies with no foreign tax credit available.
When is my return due?
15 June, under the automatic extension for filers living abroad. Form 4868 moves it to 15 October, and I file the extension free.
Do I have to file an FBAR for my Bahraini bank account?
If your foreign accounts together passed $10,000 at any point in the year, yes. You can file it free through FinCEN's own system. The non-willful penalty for not filing is $16,536.
I have not filed for several years. What now?
The Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures: three returns, six FBARs and Form 14653 certifying non-willfulness. Penalties are waived. Note that the IRS terminated the separate Delinquent FBAR Submission Procedures around 1 July 2026.
Filing from Bahrain this year?
Twenty minutes with the Enrolled Agent who will prepare and sign it. Complete return, $599.
